Yaz is mainly used as a contraceptive and works by stopping the woman’s eggs from developing completely each month. The egg is unable to accept sperm, making fertilization impossible. The egg is unable to accept sperm, making fertilization impossible.
Yaz is an effective form of birth control pill, and it is made from an estrogen and a progestin. The drug’s main function is to block ovulation, thereby preventing pregnancy. Yaz is more powerful than some other contraceptive, in that it inhibits pregnancy in three different ways. Yaz affects the cervical mucus, lowering the chance for sperm to enter the uterus. Yaz also changes the endometrium (the physical lining of the uterus), which in turn makes it less receptive to an embryo.
One of the other Yaz uses is to treat a premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (or PMS). Women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder experience very strong physical and emotional symptoms around two weeks before the start of their menstrual flow. Another of the main Yaz uses is to treat acne in women over 14. These women have to have already started menstruating and also choose Yaz as a birth control pill, but the side effects of reducing acne are quite powerful.
Yaz is a birth control product which affects one’s hormones, and as such, it can affect the body drastically. However, Yaz problems are rare and only affect a very small proportion of women.
Do not take Yaz if:
- You are allergic to the ingredients within Yaz.
- You have ever had a problem with blood clotting, or blood vessel issues like strokes, or bleeding on the brain.
- You are currently pregnant, or you have suspicions you are pregnant.
- You have had some serious heart problems. These include irregular heartbeat, angina, some certain types of strong headaches, very high blood pressure, diabetes which is affecting your circulation, cervical or vaginal cancer or abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- You are a kidney disease sufferer, you have liver disease or have a history of yellowing eyes or skin due to a previous pregnancy or birth control usage.
- You have recently undergone surgery and you will be bed-ridden for a long period of time.
- You smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day and you are over 35 years old.
If you have had any of these conditions you may still be able to take Yaz but you should contact your doctor first for advice.
Yaz Side Effects
Yaz uses a combination of hormones, called ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone (DRSP). Both are synthetic variants of estrogen and progestin. Drospirenone is a progestin and very likely the source of serious health problems reported in women taking Yaz. Drospirenone is a “fourth generation” progestin, and is also found in Yasmin and its generic version, Ocella.
Yaz side effects are usually caused by too much or too little of estrogen and progestin in the pill formulation. Symptoms can include:
- breast tenderness;
- hair loss;
- weight gain;
These may be signs of serious health problems like:
- Hepatic adenomas or benign liver tumors;
- Gallbladder disease;
- Arterial thromboembolism;
- Pulmonary embolism;
- Myocardial infarction;
- Cerebral hemorrhage;
- Cerebral thrombosis.
Gallbladder disease is of particular concern, as many women have developed this condition recently.

This pill gave me PCOS after 6 months. I never had ANY hormonal issues before I started Yaz and now I'll probably never be able to have anymore children. The same thing happened to a close friend of mine as well. Be careful!
My first few months I had severe acne. Ive never really had a problem with acne. I stuck with this pill because I read a lot of reviews that said to give it 3 months and you would have wonderful skin. It never happened for me. After a couple of months it started giving me a yeast infection every month. The last month it was so bad I had to quit pills mid month. I've read that the progestin was too high for my body. I'm searching for something else to take.
In theory this pill worked well. I had significantly less weight gain and bloating than with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo and Alesse, though I did still notice a slight increase in overall weight likely resulting from strong and often unusual cravings. The trouble really started when I opted to ditch the pill as I maintain an otherwise entirely natural health routine and had no need for contraceptives.I suffered two fainting spells and one seizure after quitting this pill (I'd stopped three separate times with one incident following each time at about the three week mark). I suffered a significant concussion with each fainting spell, particularly scary as I've got a history of head injuries from my "extreme" hobbies. I'm looking into new options; the pros just don't outweigh the cons in this case!
Well, my periods did become regular and lighter. However, it made me so depressed I was literally crying every single day over the studipest things. Got off it, and the depression went away.
Update to last comment. I went off Yaz after being on it 6 months because I wasn't healing from injuries, had low sex drive, gained some weight....thought pill be contributing, so tried going off it. After 3 weeks off, my hair started falling out and ket falling ou for a fe wweeks...probably lost 1/3 of my hair. Muscle seemed to increase, sex drive returned, weight stable. Maybe coincidence, but hormone change can cause all of the above symptoms. Was a good pill for other reasons though.
Loved the short/moderate/predicatable periods...used to be 7-8 days/heavy and happen every 3 weeks. May have also reduced discharge a bit between periods (lovely gift we have, huh?). Helped with depression a bit. Made boobs a bit bigger for the first month or two...then i think they shrunk again. I'm an A, so if it's water gain, size increase would be proportional to your normal boob size. I think it made me gain about 5 Lbs. I'm on Oracea for rosacea, so can't comment on if it helped my mild acne. Sex drive decreased quite a bit. First couple months was spotting and had headache a couple days, but went away after that. Good pill if it didn't decrease sex drive and cause a bit of weight gain...also, the potential side affects are scary!
I wouldn't even give yaz one star for all the damage it caused me. The best thing about it was that my skin had never been so clear and clean. Otherwise the year ordeal of just utter illness was so not worth the clear skin. I was so sick that I was tested for so many things. I went through a colonoscopy, endoscopy, CT scans, and so much more. I asked my doc if it could be the birth control and he refused to believe it was possible. Finally it was determined that my gallbladder was no longer functioning and it had to be removed. I continued to take the pill after my surgery and was still having problems. Only on my own did I decide to stop taking it and began to feel better. I tried a class action lawsuit, but the bayer corp. refuted that yaz was the cause of my sickness. I lost a whole year of my life due to yaz. I still have the scars to prove it. Avoid yaz, beyaz and yasmin. They are poison. I have never been so sick in all my life.
Loved his pill..the best pill in genereal..never had a problem!!
This pill almost killed me. It ruined my life for the 2 years that I was on it. I got sicker and sicker and no doctor could figure out why. I developed stomach pain, depression, anxiety, hair loss, lightheadedness, nausea, headaches, allergies.. and much more. The fatigue became so bad that I went from a healthy and active young women to being completely bed-ridden. I had to quit my job. I just got sicker and sicker until one day I decided to stop the pill. I have slowly recovered, but I still can't work. PLEASE do not risk it. This pill is like a poison.
"S.O.S" I began taking YAZ in 2008 and forcefully by a doctors request had to stop taking YAZ in 2010. I've experienced blood clots,swelling and redness of my breast which a doctors concern led to believing I may have had breast cancer. TEST RESULTS CAME BACK NEGATIVE throughout the years. Also NOW (2012)I am currently suffering from extreme leg pains, difficulties concentrating. Last, BUT NOT LEAST I still have abnormal menstrual cycles!! HELP ME! I WANT MY OLD LIFE BACK BECAUSE FAMILY AND FRIENDS CAN'T NO LONGER ENJOY MY COMPANY. I AM LIMITED TO ALOT OF ACTIVITIES I WAS ONCE HIGHLY INTERESTED IN AS WEEL AS PHYSICALLY ABLE TO ACT UPON
I LOVED this pill. No acne except when I had my period, no weight gain, no mood swings. However, the recent research regarding DVTs and PEs worried me, so I will be switching. Hopefully something comes out that works as well as this but does not cause blood clots!
This was the first pill I tried and it reduced my acne, I had no weight gain or bloating. I was never moody. However after about 4 months I started spotting and changed pill. I'm going to go back to Yaz after trying two different pills. Yaz definitely worked the best for me.
I have been on the pill for 3 years. At first everything was fine. I don't think I noticed any problems. My skin cleared up and my period got shorter and regulated. However, I recently started throwing clots which cause EXTREME amounts of pain,my cholesterol levels have doubled and my liver has started to fail. Reading other comments I can also say that my hair is much thinner than it used to be. I just stopped taking the pill.
DO Not Take This Pill!!!! This is the worst i have ever felt. I had my period for 27 days and it was heavy as well. My periods usually last for days and medium flow. Even had to go in the hospital because of abdominal pains and constant vomiting. Its not a pill you would want to take. Don't risk it!!
Being taking the pill for quite a lot now ( almost 5 yrs ) and should say: this can't be better! I've beeb under others (not the best experiences in the past too much hormones)and its true my libido has gotten better, my periods are super light or dont even have them... My face never suffers of acne, I rarely get moody, and don't feel cramps. I even predict when Im having my period. But never forget to take it. Put it aside your tooth brush and you will never forget, take it religiously and if missed read the little book it helps... ;D ...Having a great time ladies! Ps. Remember all bodies are different thats why are different brands, so if you noticed something you didnt like, change it. If not stick to it, thats why doctors should take the time w/pacients and study, we are all ladies but we can react differently. Its totally normal science...
Do not take. Too much risk of side-effects. I ignored the commercials encouraging people to come forward for the class action lawsuit being filed against the producers of Yaz. Yaz did clear up my skin, level my periods, and was great for a while. Until after about a year of taking it, I developed extreme pain in my rib cage. Further investigation lead to the conclusion that the rib pain stemmed from gallbladder issues and low and behold, one of the dangerous side effects of yaz is development of gallbladder disease. Please heed mine, and the commercials warning and DO NOT TAKE YAZ.
I am really torn because of all the birth controls I have ever tried, I really like Yaz. It hasn't made me gain weight (with Depo I put on literally 20lbs), or made me feel like a psycho emotional girl who cries a lot. I have felt over all good, my skin is fantastic where as i used to have moderate and annoying face and back acne. i rarely get cramps and my period is borderline non existent and lasts about 2 days a month. i have been on it for 2 years now but am a little freaked out about the side effects that other people have been having. aside from all the news of the clots, i really like this pill.
I loved this birth control had absolutley no problems. I took it for a year. Suddenly got gull stones and pancreatitis and I am lucky to be alive.
Worst BCP I have ever experienced. Very severe nausea, headaches, high sensitivity to smells. I could not digest food properly and would only throw up. Drinking water in the morning would be a problem.
I have been on Yaz for almost 3 years and absolutely love it. I have PCOS and had always had terrible acne (face, chest, and back) and Yaz was the first bc to really control it. I've been on Alesse, OTL, Yasmin...and nothing worked until I went on Yaz. I have never experienced any weight gain or unusual headaches or moodiness while on any of the pills I've been on...but just like with any medication, every user will have a different experience. Had I known of the increased risk of blood clots associated with Yaz when I began it years ago, I probably still would have taken in it because I was desperate to find a cure for my PCOS, but it's each woman's choice. I feel for the women who have negative experiences with Yaz/Yasmin, but I believe that for each one who posts their terrible experience on one of these online posts, there are thousands of women around the world that Yaz is doing wonders for, and I am fortunate to be one of them! Also, I only give it four stars b/c my period is quite long (5-7 days) compared to when I was on other bc (2-3 days max), but I still do not have to suffer through horrible cramps, breast tenderness, lower back pain, etc.
I have been on this pill for three years. I have not had one problem with it. Never gained weight on it once. My acne has been good. Unfortunately my breasts have not grown. I would recommend it!
Despite what others have stated, I have had NO problems what so ever with Yaz. I have been on it for a few years now. I was mainly put on it because I have severe menstrual cramps and acne.For those of you looking into Yaz, it is a GREAT choice. The first month or so is by far the worst though, as with many other birth control pills. It's just the change in chemicals in your body. You'll feel brutal for a while but once you get past that (max) one month, you'll feel great.
I have been taking the pill for just about 1 month and i have decided to stop as of today. ever since i have been taking the pill my period lasted 10 days, i got terrible mood swings - i am very snappy at everyone and dont really feel like talking much. i have had a few headaches as well and my boobs are very tender and feel swollen. i have noticed a slight slight improvement in my skin but the mood swings and low sex drive are not worth it to me as my skin isnt that bad anyway. I guess everyones body reacts to it differently - my best friend is on it as well as she has been on it for 5 years. she is fine on it.
I really have no complaints with this pill. It's the first one I've been on so I don't have much to compare it to, but I didn't have any major side effects. No mood swings and I wasn't really prone to any either before being on this pill. I didn't gain any weight, in fact I actually lost a bit. My boobs didn't change a whole lot. I don't have much acne to begin with so I can't really vouch for how it improved my skin. The only thing I really had a problem with was the break through bleeding which lasted 2 weeks and a half, almost 3 weeks into my first pack. It wasn't heavy, but it was there and just plain annoying. Finally stopped though. No change in my sex drive, no vaginal dryness. I do get headaches sometimes, but not very often, maybe about twice and who's to say that it was from the birth control? Anyway, I don't really have anything negative to say about this pill. I was worried at first that the breakthrough bleeding would never stop, but it did. I'd say give this pill a try.
I've only taken five packs of the generic Yaz, but so far I've had some really odd side effects. My acne's gotten much better, which is great, but I'm never hungry, quite depressed and very emotional. My boobs hurt like crazy the first month and now they're just getting bigger and bigger, which I can't complain about it. I have weird cravings around my period though, and it's not really regulated like I had hoped. Hoping all the cons turn to pros though.
No sex drive. Everything makes me cry... Today burst into tears watching Planet Earth when a glow worm ate a bug it caught in its trap while it was still alive. On a positive note acne is better, periods lighter. Unfortunately crying trumps the good stuff- switching soon.
Yaz was the first birth control pill I had ever been on. I used it for 9 months and my period was never on schedule and always lasted longer than the four days it was supposed to. Sometimes it would be several days late, which gave me quite a scare the first time. The cramps didn't go away either. A few months in I also started getting random, throbbing headaches (and not the light kind either) and they soon turned to piercing migraines. I would literally wince at how sudden they came. I was very moody (I am so thankful my boyfriend managed to put up with it) and my normally high sex drive was completely gone. It took me until after stopping the pill to realize that the problems I had been having where due to Yaz. Ever since I stopped the pill the problems have gone away.I'm thinking about trying Alessa. It seems to have good reviews for the most part.
I have been on Yaz for 3 years now. Prior to Yaz I was on the patch (which was horrible) and then Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. I switched to Yaz because I wanted to have shorter periods. I'd say it took almost 2 years for my body to adjust from having a period for 7 days down to 3 days. I noticed the last couple years I have had very low libido but I am not sure if it is due to Yaz or not. Now I am experiencing bleeding in between cycles, so it's like I am having a period every other week. I don't know what is going on. Going to make a doc appointment and I am looking to switch, but don't want tog o back to a 21 day pill. I would much rather stay with a 24day.
I used Yaz for about a year and it was obviously effective for preventing pregnancy and it did clear up my skin but for me there were a few negative side effects. It took a while to realize it was the Yaz causing the problems. I suddenly had very brittle dry hair that would break off and it just didnt seem to grow very much. My cuticles became very dry which caused my nails to become more apt to breakage. My eyes were very dry and I had to use eye drops several times a day. I have been off of Yaz for about 3 weeks and already my hair is so much healthier and my nails have not broken in a few weeks. I have gone from using eye drops a few times a day to a few times a week. The down side of being off of Yaz is my skin has broken out more but I can deal with that better than all the other symptoms.
I have been on Yaz for 2 months now, and its my first experience with BC. When i went to the doctor (with no way to research before hand) i asked for the safest pill and he prescribed yaz. Now after reading all the cooons about it, i'm getting concerned, even though i have had absolutely no problems with it at all. Should i be so concerned??
Before i started taking birth control I have light-moderate acne. I originally started taking Alesse for contraceptive reasons, took that for 4 months, and it made my breakouts constant. I switched to Yaz, and within a week my acne was virtually gone. Toward the end of the month, around my period, the acne came back, but after the first week of the second pack, my acne was almost gone, and its been another full month and I only ever have an occasional break-out (usually a single pimple) that clears up in about a day or two.I have had no side affects or weight-gain
With all of the lawsuits out for Yaz I wonder why doctors are still prescribing this birth control pill.
I was on Yaz for 10 months. I have never had trouble with my skin and this pill didn't cause any changes with that. However, while taking Yaz I became incredibly depressed, had terrible mood swings, lost interest in my life in general, and found it near impossible to concentrate on anything. I am just finishing my last month of Yaz and am then going to start Alesse, and from what I have read so far it doesn't generally have a significant affect on you mood, so I'm really hoping for an improvement because the way Yaz has made me feel is completely not worth it. Make sure you do your research before starting any pill or before changing from another brand. Also, Bayer (the producer of Yaz) has been under fire recently because of studies showing that Yaz, compared to other pills, increases your chance of developing blood clots, which can be fatal. Bayer has already had to alter Yaz in Europe but they haven't in North America, so be careful.
THE WORST PILL. Do not take it. I was extremely depressed for no reason, and it actually was ruining my life. I am normally a very happy person, not a cranky emotional mess. PLUS, there is a huge lawsuit against Yaz and Yasmin, people have died from it.
My friend had her gallbladder removed due to complications from Yaz. She stopped taking it immediately and hasn't had a period since. Her hormone levels are now that of a pre-menstrual female. She always tells me to get off of Yaz and I had planned to next time I saw my doctor for the yearly visit. I've been on Yaz for probably 3 years and have always had regular periods, I would start on a Tuesday night and be done by Saturday morning. This month---no period. I've never missed a period before. I've taken several pregnancy tests and they are all negative. I understand stress can play a factor and there has been some stress lately but like I said...I've never missed a period and I've been through MUCH more stressful times than now. Nothing has changed (no prescriptions, no illnesses, no change in diet, no weight loss, etc...) so I'm wondering if Yaz has something to do with it? Has anyone else thats been on Yaz for a few years and had consistant periods all of a sudden missed one and wasn't pregnant?
I have been on Yaz for 3 yrs. I love it and have no complaints. I might have one moody day out of the month. I take it the same time every morning. Have never had any scares that I was or could be pregnant and I get my period for about 4 days out of the month and it is not heavy at all. Now I am being told by my prescription drug plan that it is no longer on the preferred drug list and will be 40 a month! I am trying to find out what BC compares to this one because I am not thinking i want to pay 40 a month for yaz. Anyone have any suggestions?
I love Yas!!! It made crazy for about 2 months, but then everything was great. I ate right and I worked out every week and I never had any problems.
I'm 28 and since I work at an OB-GYN office, I'm somewhat of a birth control connoisseur. I was on Yaz for a year and I switched to Beyaz 4 months ago. In the entire time I've been taking these pills, I've only had 3 periods even though I take the placebo pills. Also, I haven't experienced a single one of the bad side effects like I've had with other pills. No weight gain, no tenderness, no periods, and my sex drive has improved too. I rate Yaz and Beyaz an A !
This is absolutely the BEST birth control I've found. I have PMDD, and I spent the better part of my early twenties bouncing from one BC to another, trying ot find one that didn't make me gain weight, feel depressed, or both! Yaz has been amazing. I feel like myself- which is huge! Most birth controls made me have crazy mood swings and feel nuts. Also, I've been able to lose 15lbs while on Yaz, instead of gaining about 15 on all other birth control pills. I absolutely love this pill, and would highly recommend it to anyone who has PMDD, or has negative reactions to your traditional etrogen-based pill.
I was on Yaz for 4 years, and I've loved it! I took it for acne and cramps, and my skin cleared right away, and my periods were always manageable. My boobs grew from an A to a C (though that might be an effect of aging, too), and my sex drive was as high as ever. However, the high levels of pregestin have apparently given me chronic low-level yeast infections, which have irritated my skin so much that I can't have sex! I'm switching to Alesse next month, though I'll miss all the benefits of Yaz.
I switched from Alesse to Yaz. It didn't help my skin problem at all and it made my already fickle stomach/digestive system even worse. I ran out of packs for one month and used an extra pack of Alesse instead - all the crummy symptoms disappeared, then reappeared as soon as I started taking it again, so I think I'll be switching back.
Yaz is horrible. I gained about 15 pounds and had crazy mood swings. not to mention i also got pregnant.
this pill made ME SO FATTTT. my BOOBS GOT HUGE! but it made my skin great... so unless you want to be obese,, dont go on this pill
Yaz is not good for you. Yaz has pretty much ruined my life. I lost my sex drive, had hair loss, three months after I quit taking Yaz I still have problems.
this pill is TERRIBLE!! I have had it for two years and my last period lasted 14 days with the worst cramps and breakouts ever, this pill sucks!
I also gained soooo much weight on Yaz that i cannot lose!!! I had been taking Yasmin since I was 16 and am now 27. I switched to Yaz about a year ago, and it was THE BIGGEST mistake ever!! I'm back to taking Yasmin and have noticed that my weight has dropped (A little, slowly though) and I am in better moods as well. Yaz is terrible and if you need to gain 30 pounds, i would only reccommend it for that reason!
I first started out on Alesse when I was 16 because my period was really bad. I lost about 20 pounds on it but I constantly got yeast infections and had almost no sex drive. I went off the pill for a year and then started up Yaz. In like 6 months I gained 30 pounds which I can not lose no matter what I do. My skin is great,my sex drive is awesome and I barely get my period, but since I gained the weight I feel depressed. The weight gain came so fast that at least once a week someone asks me if im pregnant. Im calling my doctor today and trying something else.
This pill was ok. I used to get a little bit of acne every now and then but when I used this pill for a few months I haven't had a pimple! It cleared my face up so much! ...the only problem is I have no sex-drive what so ever!
I TOOK THE YAZ PILL AND IT ALMOST KILLED ME. I WAS SITTING ON BED AND I HAD A TERRIBLE PAIN IN MY CHEST. I HAD TO GO TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL I THOUGHT I WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL. ITS SOOOO BAD.
Nat: Your story sounds exactly like mine. Depression runs in my family also. I actually felt good on Yaz, and I lost a lot of weight - but that was because I had constant stomach cramping and diarrhea. My hair started falling out too. The doc switched me to alesse. I have been on it for over a year now, and it is working fine. I don't have the stomach cramping and my hair has stopped falling out in huge quantities. I do miss the weight loss, but I guess I can just take a laxative for the same effect!
Be sure to do thorough research on Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella before you start taking the pill. They work well for some women but could cause serious injury to others. Oral contraceptives like Yaz have been linked to serious, life-threatening side effects like blood clots, pulmonary embolism, strokes, heart attacks, gallbladder disease, and liver tumors. There’s a great site called YazTalk that has a lot of information about side effects of this pill. Check it out at www.YazTalk.com.
I have been on Yaz for two years and because of all the bad reviews and media attention it has gotten I decided to quit and switch to a different pill Alesse. Has anyone else taken these two pills? I have always thought I liked Yaz besides a couple of months I would have my period as normal and then it would get extremely heavy right when it should have been ending....weird. Also, after reading these reviews I think I can contribute my depression to this pill...I had always thought it was just a genetics thing. Some of my family struggle with depression. If anyone else has switched specifically from Yaz to Alesse please tell me about it.. I am a little leary of the switch.
This pill worked great for me. I never had any issues. But I did find that my periods are still a full week and not shortened, even though there was only 4 placebos. I use to be on yasmin and that worked well for me too. I'm now looking into using a pill where i only get my period once every 3 months, the reviews are intimitading. I guess everyone just has different experiences.
I was off the pill for 1-2 years, I went back on the pill now for purely contraceptive reason. I started taking it on the 1st day of my period (4th), now it is 14th, I still see a brown strip of blood/mixture on my pantyliner everyday. I am going to see a doctor on 16th. On the other hand, I did not feel any cramps this past month, usually I cramp so much that I wouldn't want to move much... I used to take Ortho Lo Tricyclen, I have not stopped taking YAZ just yet (not sure if that's a safe thing to do) but I will definitely ask my doc to prescribe me Ortho on Tuesday.
This pill RUINED MY LIFE! Within 4 days of tasking it I began having severe anxiety which turned into panic attacks. They wouldn't go away even after I stopped the pill. I had to go on anti-depressants to re-regulate my body! Would not recommend to ANYONE!!
Before Taking Yaz My period was completely normal and so was my sex drive. I had been taking Yaz for a year... within that year i had the worst Periods of my life. Also i had a complete loss of Sex drive, safe to say i am not on Yaz anymore.
I know everyone has heard the "bad" story of yaz. Well Im one of those stories. Im 18 years old and was put on b.c when i was 16 because of the pains i would get from craps and in my back and for signs of pmdd. i decided to try yaz because it was for pmdd.no more than 4 months after that i was having the worse pain in the world because of my gall bladder(I could not eat, it would come right back up). I would never wish that pain on anyone. i would lay in bed for day because it hurt to move. i never had any problems with it before. i never had any medical problems know it is different for everyone, but please take it from me. its a 3rd generation b.c do your reading. Also other then the pain it caused i went into extreme depression. i would cry, yell scream, for no reason. im telling my story now because i want women to know what its like if you do decide to take yaz.I ended up having to get surgery to get my gall bladder removed. Its not fun. Im on a mission to let women know what its really like. I have a 21 year old friend who took yaz, and ended up have to major blood clots! Thats a big deal @ 21. Like I said each person is different, but I have not heard one good thing about yaz in a long time and I really hope no one else will have to go threw what I did.
Yaz=the devil pill!I took yaz for 6 months. I began having severe mood swings, lethargy, muscle aches and serious depression...we're talking suicidal depression, here. The bad thing was, I didn't even realize what was causing it. I thought I was going crazy. My sister (who has used Yaz for 3 years with no problems) and my mom started hearing some negative things about this pill, and they convinced me to come off of it. About a month later, i had a gallbladder attack, which I am convinced is connected. I've been off the pill for 3 months, and I feel SO much better. I'm hesitant to start another bc pill...but my gyn gave me a prescription for Desogen, and I'm considering it. Any thoughts?
I switched to Yaz from Yasmin due to PMDD symptoms and rave reviews from a few friends [super light periods, increased breast size, no bad side effects, etc]. The first month was fantastic - no terrible PMS, got a little weepy one day prior to starting. Period lasted almost 24 hours and was incredibly light. Second month - cried about the most non-sensical things for the few days prior to starting and got a yeast infection. Period lasted almost 48 hours and was incredibly light. Third month - cried about non-sensical things again, got another yeast infection, and had no sex drive. Period was super super heavy for 9 days. Fourth month - cried almost uncontrollably for a full week prior to starting my period and then a few days into it [constant tears, once again about non-sensical things], STILL had a yeast infection from the prior month that I was only able to keep at bay - not get rid of, and no sex drive. Period lasted 5 days, wasn't super heavy except one day but was only light the first and last day. I had enough of the constant crying [although it was better than wanting to punch everyone I saw, I just couldn't take the mood swings]. Had enough of the chronic yeast infection [was on a pill many many years ago that gave me that side effect]. Dr. gave me double prescription to treat the yeast and switched me to a different progesterone saying that Yasmin and Yaz both cause major mood swings in a lot of people. The yeast infection is just hit or miss on how your body reacts to the changes... Oh and I didn't have acne to begin with but I started breaking out after the second month which is really rare for me. Hated it.
I have been on Yaz for 6 months now and it seems to be working wonderfully for me. I had previously tried Alesse and LoEstrin, but I found that they both decreased my libido. Once I got on Yaz, I found that my libido was back to normal, so therefore this is the best pill so far.
I was on Yaz for two years and absolutly loved it. But each month when I would pick up from the pharmacy, it would increase $5 each time. Before too long it was $70 for a pack. I don't want to switch but have to because of my budget.
I've taken it over a year. Works great for me for period management. I don't know how well it prevents pregnancy because I use other methods in addition. Only switching because Yaz is expensive.
I was on Yaz for about a year. The first few months were great..my skin looked so great! I started becoming depressed after about 3 months and it became increasingly worse and it decreased my libido. Sex also became increasingly painful. I have heard wonderful things about Yaz from other people, but it did not work so well for me. I guess it just depends on a person's body.
So I've been on the pill for 2 years now and it was great the first year I had no weight gain my skin was completely clear my boobs grew a cup size bigger...yaz does not change your period it just stays the same, so I did not mind that and it was cool. Until my right foot started to swell randomly and I had no idea what the hell it was and like my heart started to beat abnormally. When I saw the commercial for the side effects thats when I knew that I was have heart palpitations and yaz was increasing my potassium which was making myh foot swell. So now I am currently looking for a new birth control before I have a heart attack.
I was on Yaz for a little over a year. It helped clear up my skin, my breasts enlarged a full cup size which was good for me, and I was finally having regular periods. However, I got EXTREMELY depressed, severe mood swings, and cried all the time. The cons were definitely not worth the pros. I just switched to microgestin which is the generic for Loestrin so hopefully it serves me better.
I used to be on Yasmn and my skin was great changed to progesterone only as I gained alot of weight but got terrible cystic acne, so went on to Yaz as it's a lower dose of Yasmin...huge mood swings awful pill.
Well I thought this pill worked really well. I guess Yaz did work for about a year. Now my periods are heavy again and I am tired all the time. My doctor just switched me to Loestrin..so we shall see!
I would not recommend YAZ to anyone. I got pregnant while on YAZ my cousin did too. So did my sister in law and a fellow co-worker. a nurse at the military hospital I went to said she had a lot of complaints about its failure. I wouldnt recommend it unless maybe you want to get pregnant!
Ive only been on it for a month, starting my next month soon. So far no side affects. Some comments are a little alarming! But no spotting, a little more moody. Its hard to say about sex drive, or acne cause it has only been one month!
I was prescribed YAZ and have not started taking it yet. I searched online for reviews and found alot of negative. That scared me but then I have read alot of good reviews. I believe people are more likely to post a review for a bad experience than for a good one. So Thank you all for your good reviews!!
Cornerning the hair loss...during the second week of taking this pill I had a lot of shedding one time after I lost my hair. It stopped thought thank god and only lasted for 2 days. My hair went back to normal in two weeks so dont worry it stops and eventually evens off. I guess its just ur body getting used to yet. At the beginning I had a few days I was depressed a little but now I'm back to normal. So far soo good now.
Does anyone else have extreme hair loss on this pill?
I was on this - then one month it just stopped working. I had spotting all that month. Then I refilled the prescription at a new pharmacy - no problems!
I love this pill.
This pill has worked the best for me. Hasn't done too much for my acne - but I don't have any bloating and less moodiness. My doctor said that you have to be careful not to take anything with nsaids for a long time(like ibruprofen) when you are on YAZ. I guess they raise the potassium level.
HORRIBLE!!! I had the worse side effects: hair loss for about a year, (that's why i had to switch to a different brand) crazy mood swings (always cry about everything or/and nothing!) decrease in my sex drive drastically ever since I've been on it. The good thing about it is that I have light period and no acne.
