Safyral is a fourth generation contraceptive that combines a unique blend of three active ingredients (drospirenone, ethinyl estradiol, and levomefolate). However, drospirenone found in Safyral may be responsible for dangerous side effects. Women who take Safyral may increase their risk of developing blood clots, stroke or heart attack.

Safyral garnishes the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its ability to assist in the prevention of pregnancy. However, women may also use Safyral as a source of vitamin B to raise their folate levels.

While previous contraceptives used levonorgestrel as their active ingredient, Safyral utilizes a combination of levomefolate, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Ethinyl estradiol prohibits the ovulation process in women, while drospirenone alters conditions in the cervical lining to prevent sperm from reaching the uterus. Levomefolate is a form of vitamin B that may help decrease the risk of rare birth defects in children born to mothers who used a form of oral contraception.

While Safyral has been proven to be 99% effective when taken as directed, it may be responsible for dangerous side effects. The drospirenone contained in Safyral may lead to the development of severe, life-threatening blood clots, heart attack or stroke.

Safyral Side Effects

The drospirenone contained in this contraceptive may lead to one or more of the following Safyral side effects:

  • Blood Clots
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Stroke
  • Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA)
  • Heart Attack
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Gallbladder Disease / Injury (cholecystitis)
  • Gallbladder Removal (cholecystectomy)

Safyral Blood Clots

Drospirenone found in Safyral may introduce concentrated levels of potassium into a patient’s bloodstream. Though potassium is an essential mineral for the body, excessive levels may prove to be hazardous to an individual. Excess potassium may lead to a blockage of the bloodstream. Women who use Safyral may be at a greater risk of developing a stroke, heart attack or venous thromboembolism (blood clot) because of this blockage.

Venous thromboembolism is a condition in which a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs. It is a serious condition because a blood clot that has formed in a vein can break loose and travel to the lungs, which has the potential to cause a heart attack or stroke.

Ladies, please do your research on this pill. The last two weeks of the pill I experience inconsolable depression and crying spells for no reason. The first 2 weeks in the pack are normal but brace yourself for the last two. I am athletic, not overweight, happy-go-lucky for the most part but this pill has made me lose my zeal for life. I will quit this pill at the end of this pack and switch to something else. I took this pill for 4 months.

I have been on birth control for about five years now and I'm going to review my whole experience, ending with Safyral which is my current birth control. Nuvaring - Couldn't stand it, made me CRAZYOcella - Better moods, but was taken off the marketZarah - Hated it. Made me feel awful.Yaz - Liked it, but become extremely expensive even w/insurance and I had a friend with blood clots in her lungs due to it and she had to be hospitalizedSafryl - A good replacement if you liked Ocella (and the Bayer card helps with $$)My conclusion - I am getting OFF of birth control. Right now I am on a doctor weight loss program and having lots of problems losing weight because my estrogen is out of whack. I never wanted to be on birth control in the first place, but was having side pain that was mis-diagnosed for ovarian cysts. I'm taking natural supplements to fix my hormone levels and I have so much more energy and I am feeling great. Here's to life without being tied to a pill!

Was on it one month with same negative side effects of Beyaz... maybe because it's the exact same dang formula?!! Oh .01 estrogen less. What won't Big Pharm do to keep the $ rolling in? My Dr was bought, sold, and is anchored to the Bayer handouts. Not me any more, thanks for the lesson in my thyroid and liver functions Bayer, but no thanks. Take it back!

I'm a guy and i love this pill! it tastes great! i eat them like candy! the only side effect is that my testes fell off.
